Self-negotiation
This morning it was again just two of us. The ambient temperature was cold... I think about 5 or 6 degrees, but the water felt nice and warm.
Someone asked me how I motivate myself to still swim, and I suppose the answer is that it is not about motivation, it is about making it non-negotiable...It is just something I do, same as brushing teeth or going to work. I certainly do not feel excited about work every morning, but it is kind of non-negotiable and usually turns out okay...it is the same with swimming or going to to gym. As soon as it is about how you feel, you will probably not feel like leaving your nice warm bed to go out in the dark and be cold and wet.
I love the Knowledge Project podcast by Farnam street, and to quote a saying from their Twitter page:
'A lot of people get stuck negotiating with themselves. A little voice in their head says, “I don’t feel like doing this right now. Let’s do it later.” The minute you entertain that thought, it’s over. Design the defaults, and don’t negotiate with yourself.'
Stop the negotiation and come swim...
Picture - taken after the swim...I feel like it is definitely lighter.
